Set up an authenticator app

Protect password sign-ins with a changing six-digit code.

  1. Open Security & sessions and choose Set up authenticator. Enter your current password.
  2. Scan the QR code with your authenticator app, or enter the setup key manually. Keep the key private.
  3. Enter the current six-digit code to activate protection. Save the recovery codes somewhere safe; they are shown once.
  4. Future password sign-ins require an authenticator or recovery code. A code cannot be reused. Wait for the next code if necessary and ensure your device time is automatic. Existing passkeys remain a secure alternative.
